Masood Akhtar, MD, FACC, FACP, FAHA, MACP

Dr. Masood Akhtar has specialized in electrophysiology since 1972 and is considered one of the world's preeminent electrophysiologists. Dr. Akhtar was honored with the Pioneer in Electrophysiology Award (1999) by the Board of Trustees of the North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology (now Heart Rhythm Society)

Dr. Akhtar came to Aurora Sinai Medical Center (formerly Mount Sinai Medical Center) in 1977 to develop the electrophysiology program. Today the program has more full-time electrophysiologists than any other program in the U.S. and enjoys a national reputation for innovation, quality and service. Electrophysiology laboratories at both St. Luke’s Medical Center and St. Joseph’s Hospital in Milwaukee were also developed by Dr. Akhtar.

Dr. Akhtar has lectured extensively throughout the United States, Asia, Europe and South America and has chaired and spoken at many national and international conferences.

Dr.Akhtar is Director of Arrhythmia Services at the Milwaukee Heart Institute, and Chief of Cardiology at Aurora Sinai Medical Center. In 1984 he was named Cardiovascular Researcher of the Year by the American Heart Association. From 1996 to 1998 he served as president of this chapter of the AHA.

Dr. Akhtar is a prolific publisher of research, including a book called "Sudden Cardiac Death: Prevalence, Mechanisms and Approaches to Diagnosis and Management," edited with Robert J. Myerburg, MD and Jeremy N. Ruskin, MD. He contributed a chapter called "Sudden Cardiac Death" for Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine (edited by E Topol) and one entitled "Technique of Electrophysiology Testing" for Hurst's The Heart, 8th edition, (edited by RC Schlant and RW Alexander). In all, Dr. Akhtar has produced 192 original manuscripts, 130 reviews and chapters, and 298 published abstracts.

He has served on committees of many professional organizations and been on the editorial board or been a peer reviewer for such major cardiology journals as Circulation, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the New England Journal of Medicine and others.

He has trained more than 40 fellows as electrophysiologists, now in practices and teaching institutions across the U.S., in South America, the Far and Middle East, and Europe. He served on the Test Committee for the American Board of Internal Medicine to develop the certifying examination for competence in clinical electrophysiology (1990-1996) and has been listed in "The Best Doctors in America" since 1992.
